BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that can help to save fuel and reduce environmental impact. The E-Class Coupé combines the most efficient engines with optimum aerodynamics and energy management features to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

The ECO display in the instrument cluster (not available for 4-cylinder petrol engines) shows information on the efficiency of the driver’s driving style which motivates the driver to reduce consumption by adapting his driving style.

ECO start/stop function

The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine automatically when the car comes to a stop (e.g. in traffic jams or at traffic lights). If a vehicle is equipped with the ECO start/stop function, a starter/generator is installed in place of the starter. Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/generator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle's electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine.

  • Savings potential: A shift recommendation displayed in the instrument cluster of manual transmission vehicles prompts the driver to make an early upshift to save fuel.
  • Configuration options: The ECO start/stop function can be deactivated manually using a switch and is switched off automatically when the interior temperature falls below a set value (networked with the climate control system), for example.
Intelligent energy management

Significant savings can also come from a series of small contributions. With the aim of making the E-Class Coupé more fuel efficient, the Mercedes-Benz engineers examined all the main components with regard to their energy usage and found ways of getting them to work more economically. Overview of efficient energy management measures:

  • Demand-oriented control: The regulated power-steering pump reduces energy consumption.
  • Efficient alternator management: Kinetic energy from braking and coasting is used to charge the battery.
  • More efficient fuel management: The pressure of the fuel pump is aligned with the precise volume of fuel needed at the time.
  • Air conditioning only as required: if not required, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine's belt drive.

Efficiency technologies for the E-Class Coupé

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines combine irresistible performance with low consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise levels optimised – while reduced compression makes for lower emission levels.

Direct injection, increased compression and turbocharging in the new petrol engines deliver outstanding torque, output and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology has significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption compared with previous models.
