Intelligent Drive

On the road to accident-free driving

What began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS we have now advanced into a new dimension in driving: Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive – comfort and safety have now been fused. You can see it and feel it in the new GLE Coupé.

Using networking – our safety experts call it "sensor fusion" – the assistance systems analyse complex situations and, thanks to improved peripheral sensors, identify dangers in road traffic more effectively.

Equipment availability depends on the engine and configuration selected. You will find details in the equipment information for each model.

DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control

As much support and assistance as necessary, as little stress as possible: This system implements the philosophy of forward-looking driving in a unique manner. Because it can recognise critical situations at an early stage and warn you. If needs be, it can also intervene.

The innovative driver assistance system automatically helps drivers to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and removes some of the strain on long journeys and in stop-and-go traffic. The system gives off a visual warning signal if the safe distance has been breached and an audible signal if there is danger of a collision.

In doing so it takes into account the drive programme chosen "Comfort" or "Sport", by accelerating either in a more moderate manner, i.e. comfort-oriented, or more dynamically.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE with HOLD function, Hill-Start Assist, priming and brake drying function in wet conditions

We prioritise safety in our vehicles – beginning with the standard equipment. Proven systems support you in complicated situations that you can be faced with daily in road traffic.

The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On the one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier on the other.

By priming the brakes the brake linings are already brought close to the discs should the driver takes his foot abruptly off the accelerator. The valuable time won as a result shortens the brakes' response time and can thus reduce the stopping distance.

The system also intervenes to support the driver on uphill gradients, thereby helping to make the journey more relaxed. The Hill-Start Assist function prevents the vehicle from rolling back when moving from the brake to the accelerator pedal The HOLD function can keep the vehicle stationary without having to maintain constant pressure on the brake pedal.

And finally, the "brake drying" function provides a further boost to safety: In the wet it carries out brief braking impulses, imperceptible to the driver. This enables the water film which has built up on the brake discs to be eliminated which significantly reduces the response time of the brakes.

Active Lane Keeping Assist

The system can identify an unintentional drifting out of lane, send a haptic warning (steering-wheel vibrations) to the driver, and can help to return the vehicle to the correct lane by selectively braking individual wheels.

If the driver does not react to the warning, Active Lane Lane-Keeping Assist can help to return the vehicle to the correct lane by selectively braking individual wheels Braking interventions are always performed when the vehicle unintentionally drifts across continuous lane marking lines.

In the case of interrupted lane marking lines, an intervention only takes place if the radar sensors detect the danger of a collision on the adjacent lane, for instance, due to oncoming vehicles, overtaking vehicles or the presence of another vehicle travelling in the same direction. If driver action is detected or if the turn indicator has been set, the intervention does not take place at all.

The system operates in the speed range from 60 to 200 km/h and in the instrument cluster via the "Assistance" menu under "Settings" it can be activated/deactivated and adjusted in terms of sensitivity (Standard / Adaptive).

Active Blind Spot Assist

The system makes one of the biggest dangers in road traffic visible – vehicles in the blind spot. When changing lane, for example, it can warn the driver and apply selective braking to individual wheels to avert a potential collision.

The Active Blind Spot Assist radar sensors monitor the hard-to-see sector at the sides and behind the vehicle. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot area, a red triangle appears in the relevant exterior mirror.

If the driver fails to notice the warning and indicates to signal a lane change, the warning light starts to flash and an audible warning is sounded. If in spite of the warnings a lane change is initiated, the system can warn the driver by tangible course-correcting braking interventions and if even then no reaction is forthcoming, can contribute actively towards manoeuvring the vehicle out of the danger zone.

We always keep an eye on you. Using an analysis of your driving behaviour at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h, ATTENTION ASSIST can prompt you to take a break in good time. For your own safety.

In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's actions ATTENTION ASSIST recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep.

BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist

The preventive system can reduce the risk of rear-end and crossing-traffic accidents. If a dangerous situation is detected and the driver applies the brakes, BAS PLUS can increase brake pressure in accordance with the situation, in order to ideally prevent a collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian.

When driving in road traffic it is important to register as much as possible of all the is going on around the vehicle. With this technology we expand your radius. So that you or the Adaptive Brake Assist system can intervene in good time.

The system gives the driver a visual warning if the distance to the vehicle in front is too small. If the danger of a collision is detected an acoustic warning signal is emitted; thereafter, the driver's braking action can be supported, and if the driver does not react, the vehicle speed can be autonomously reduced.

To make this possible, we have combined a radar-based proximity warning, the braking support provided by the Adaptive Brake Assist system and autonomous partial braking. A warning light appears in the instrument cluster if the distance to the vehicle ahead falls below a preset value for several seconds within the speed range 30 to 250 km/h. An intermittent tone is also sounded if the distance continues to drop quickly.

A potential collision with a moving object can be identified within the speed range 7 to 250 km/h – and with a stationary obstacle within the range 7 to around 70 km/h. If the driver responds with emergency braking, Adaptive Brake Assist can help. If required, it boosts braking pressure to help prevent a collision where possible.

If the driver does not respond, the system initiates autonomous partial braking. This significantly reduces road speed and the driver receives an additional haptic warning. At low relative speeds, this intervention is sufficient to prevent a rear-end collision.

PRE-SAFE® system

Every Mercedes-Benz vehicle boasts decades of experience in safety technology – making critical situations more and more unlikely. If despite this a critical situation should ever arise, this system will assist you with preventive and protective measures.

The PRE-SAFE® system combines passive and active features. Seat belts and airbags can protect vehicle occupants more effectively if they incorporate active systems such as driving assistance packages or Brake Assist.

PRE-SAFE® permanently evaluates sensor data from other systems, such as the ESP® Electronic Stability Program and the BAS Brake Assist, and can identify scenarios such as heavy over/understeer and emergency braking.

The system is able to identify critical handling situations in advance and initiate preventive measures for occupant protection in the event of an impending accident. These include e.g. the reversible belt tensioning or the automatic closing of any open windows.

The system has the following functions:

  • Extended occupant protection through the deployment of protection mechanisms
  • Occupant protection against intrusion of objects and objects flung around
  • Support of protective function of belts and airbags
Lane Keeping Assist

Inattention and fatigue can result in you drifting out of your lane without realising it. The system can recognise inadvertent lane departures and can warn the driver with pulsating steering-wheel vibrations.

The system processes the images provided by a camera placed behind the windscreen. Lane markings are registered thanks to differences in contrast. From these data and the actions of the driver that have been registered , the Lane Keeping system determines whether the vehicle is leaving the lane it is travelling in intentionally or not.

If the driver for instance actuates the turn signal indicator, accelerates vigorously or cuts a tight corner, the intervention can be suppressed from the outset. The system operates in the speed range from 60 to 200 km/h and in the instrument cluster via the "Assistance systems" menu it can be activated/deactivated and adjusted in terms of sensitivity (Standard / Adaptive).

Blind Spot Assist

The system makes it possible to spot one of the major hazards in traffic. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red triangle appears in the exterior mirror. Should the driver fail to notice the visual clue and activate the turn indicator, the system issues an additional audible warning.

The Blind Spot Assist radar sensors monitor the hard-to-see sector at the sides and behind the vehicle. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot area, a red triangle appears in the relevant exterior mirror. If the driver fails to notice the warning and indicates to signal a lane change, the warning light starts to flash and an audible warning is sounded.

The Blind Spot Assist system is active at speeds between 30 and 250 km/h. Below 30 km/h a yellow triangle indicates that the system is inactive. Blind Spot Assist can be activated and deactivated via the "Assistance systems" menu in the instrument cluster.

360-degree camera

This system facilitates parking and manoeuvring with a realistic all-round view with the help of four networked cameras. The vehicle and its surroundings can be shown in a bird's-eye view on the COMAND Online display, and obstacles below the window line are also made visible to the driver.

Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC

Driving is often a hectic affair. Searching for a place to park can be stressful, especially in the city centre. With this system you will have less trouble, but more comfort and safety.

The system makes finding a parking space as well as parking in both parallel and transversal spaces easier; it also assists when leaving a parallel parking space. It automatically steers the vehicle into parking spaces and frees the driver from having to steer and brake.

The system indicates with a "P" symbol and a direction arrow in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster that it has located a suitable parking space. By default the system looks on the right side of the road, when the left-side turn indicator is activated also on the left side of the road.

The steering manoeuvre is carried out automatically, but the driver can intervene at any moment. He only needs to operate the accelerator and brake pedal; in a maximum of seven moves parking is complete.

The PARKTRONIC electronic parking aid monitors the front and rear of the vehicle when manoeuvring and warns the driver if it detects a danger of collision.

Reversing camera with dynamic guide lines in display

Focus on the essentials: On what's happening in front of you. Even if you should really be looking behind you. Reverse parking and manoeuvring is considerably easier and safer using the rear-view camera.

It automatically switches on when reverse gear is engaged and shows the driver the surroundings behind the vehicle with dynamic guidelines on the CENTRAL MEDIA DISPLAY.

In this way the driver has a clear overview of driving manoeuvres. Moving and stationary objects are also shown on the display. In combination with an optional trailer coupling, the system provides an additional function that simplifies the operation/coupling of a trailer using special guidance lines and a zoom mode.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus

Whether country roads or motorways: Night driving is demanding. Because good visibility is important, but without dazzling other road users. This equipment takes some of the burden off your shoulders when driving at night.

This system makes it possible to drive with high beam constantly switched on without dazzling other motorists. The driver thus always has the optimum headlamp range at his disposal. The function is active from a speed of 30 km/h on roads without lighting.

LED Intelligent Light System

Watch how your vehicle also watches. And responds: Different weather, light and driving conditions mean different demands on vehicle lighting.

For better visibility on country roads and motorways, when turning or cornering, the LED Intelligent Light System adapts to light and driving conditions automatically. With this system the country mode light setting replaces the low-beam headlamps and the motorway lighting function. It gives brighter and more extensive illumination of the road nearside than conventional low-beam headlamps. This can help orient the driver allowing him to react sooner.

All the headlamp functions are carried out with consumption-optimised LED technology. In addition to its striking looks, LED technology impresses with its powerful luminosity, low energy consumption, high durability and a pleasant white light that simulates the spectrum of daylight .

Thanks to the "Coming Home" function you no longer need to look for your vehicle. The blue LED locator lighting for radio remote opening/closing ensures that you find your car in no time at all.

Other system equipment includes:

  • Active light function for significantly extended illumination when cornering
  • Enhanced fog lamps for improved orientation in poor visibility
  • Independently activated cornering light function improves lighting of road surface by adding light on the inside of the curve
