BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that help to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. The SL-Class Roadster combines the most efficient engines with sophisticated aerodynamic features and energy management measures to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

ECO start/stop function

The ECO start-stop function can reduce average fuel consumption by momentarily switching off the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill (e.g. at the traffic lights or in a traffic jam).

If a vehicle is equipped with the ECO start/stop function, a starter/alternator is installed in place of the starter. Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/alternator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle’s electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine.

  • Savings potential. A shift recommendation displayed in the instrument cluster prompts the driver to perform an early upshift to save fuel.
  • Configuration options. The ECO start/stop function can be deactivated manually and is switched off automatically, for example, when the interior temperature falls below a specified value (networked with climate control system).
Intelligent energy management

Significant savings can also be generated by a series of small contributions. With the aim of reducing fuel consumption for the SL Roadster, Mercedes-Benz engineers examined the energy requirements of all important assemblies and developed ways of getting them to work even more economically.

Overview of efficient energy management measures:

  • Efficient alternator management: the kinetic energy when braking and in overrun mode is used to charge the battery.
  • More efficient fuel management: the pumping pressure of the fuel pump is based on the precise amount of fuel needed at the time.
  • Air conditioning only as required: if not required, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine’s belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the SL-Class Roadster

Direct injection, downsizing, increased compression and turbocharging (for the V8 engine) in the latest generation of petrol engines deliver outstanding torque, performance and noise reduction figures. Innovative engine technology has significantly reduced emissions and fuel consumption compared with previous models.


The new BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engine generation incorporates measures such as downsizing and petrol direct injection. The V8 engine also features two compact turbochargers for fast response. Using the innovative BlueDIRECT engine technology, emissions and fuel consumption were reduced by up to approx. 24 percent compared with predecessor models.
